UPCYCLED PILLOWS

This has been the shortest week known to man!! Have you ever felt like time was just slipping through your fingers? I tell you, this week has gone by in the blink of an eye. I've gotten nothing in the way of housework or home stuff done this week but work has gotten 150% of me....I guess I can say that??

Anyhow, this week starts my official start of the Christmas. I hate the idea of Christmas shopping in December so I start at the VERY latest, October. Since October is right around the corner (OMG) there's no time better than the present for getting a jump on Christmas....

NEW TRADITIONS?

I thought I would try and start a new tradition this year by suggesting handmade gifts to the adults. Theo is the only child in our family, so the rest of the gifts are Uncle J, Aunty S and hubby and I....and Nanny of course. I don't know about you, but its increasing harder every year to find Christmas presents that aren't pointless nonsense for the adults in the family. Long gone are the days that you wait to write done what you want on your "Christmas List" and wait until December 25th to get what you want / need . My thoughts are to make something handmade for everyone this year.....I'm going to need your help closer to the time for ideas ect......What do you think? Good idea or more hassle than its worth??

GIFTS........

One gift that I have a decent track record with is pillows. I've made the Mario Fire Flower pillow for Theo, which he loved and has pretty much committed me to make one for all of his friends.  I've also made this little cutie for a friend's son.

He loves dinosaurs
Aside from the children related accessories, I've also made a pillow or two for some friends. All of the pillows I've made, started their lives as something different. I love upcycling! The dinosaur pillow used to be a fleece scarf....

Like the Poncho???? Check out what it turned it to!:

I like the way this one looks. The poncho had a great ruffle around the edge and I wanted to use that for the pillow too. Its so soft. I think it would make a great addition to an group of pillows.

I had made this one for a friend at work. I wanted to make something a little bit more special and detailed. I have a great friend that makes jewelery. She made me this absolutely beautiful ring for my birthday:

austrian glass, handmade jewelery, handcrafted

With this as my inspiration (and a craft stash filled with her old beads) I set out to try my hand at some beading on a handmade pillow. This little beauty started life as a curtain, which I picked up at a fabric store for dirt cheap!!

I sewed the curtain fabric together by hand (cause I cannot for the life of me figure out a sewing machine!!) and then cut out little petals for my flowers. The colour looks blue-y in the pictures but its more violet. She told me her bedroom was violet, so I thought this would compliment. I wanted the flowers to have something a little special. As the felt was so basic, I thought I would bling them up a little bit with the glass beads.

Working with wire and beading is not at all easy!! I had such a tough time getting them to do what I wanted and getting the wire to sit where you want????? Forget about it!! Not easy.....well for me at least. Though, it did end up being okay in the end.

Pillows are really easy to come by and can be changed really easily. Upcycle people!! Its the way forward.

Have a go at a pillow this weekend....you'll feel like you've accomplished something!

Happy Friday peeps ;-)

I agree - handmade gifts are more personal. Knowing that someone has taken the time to make something just for me is so heartwarming. I make a lot of my gifts, as well.

Thanks so much for joining in this week

  22. I think homemade items are the very best gifts, Helen! I try to include one homemade gift for everyone I know each year at Christmas. And I like making homemade things throughout the year for birthdays or when new babies arrive. It really is a gift from the heart. And your pillows are exquisite!! Anyone would be thrilled to get one, I'm sure.
